I’ve spent years looking for a spy novel series that leaves me with just as many satisfied goosebumps as Ian Fleming’s James Bond has (including some of the extended series after his passing as well).
Some come close, many miss the mark, but all in all it’s been a frustratingly enjoyable endeavor that I’ve made a habit of continuing over the last few years.
After researching other potential authors and books that supposedly touch upon the James Bond magic, I stumbled upon Donald Hamilton’s Matt Helm series.
A little more down to earth plotting, equal grit and mayhem, fantastic characterization/plots/locales…essentially a perfect Americanized version of my favorite worldly spy.
Hamilton went on to write 27 books in this acclaimed yet still reputably unsung series, and I’m just finishing up the 2nd book today.
Lots to look forward to!
I hope that everyone had a happy and safe holiday, and for those of you in the US Northeast, stay warm and cozily confined away from the snowstorm that’s beginning to grace us with its presence.
